The statuette was at the entrance to the cave, in a little cache, corresponding to the cave's earliest occupation ascribed to Middle Magdalenian IV. Photo and text above: Ladier (1. The site. The Roc du Courbet is one of a series of Upper Palaeolithic rockshelters near the village of Bruniquel, in France's Tarn region. Located within the face of a massif or cliff (now known as Courbet), it was first explored by Vicomte de Lastic Saint- Jal in 1. Lastic, M. Owen in 1. Owen. 18. 69a). It is believed that the majority of the remains recovered were derived from de Lastic's black layer or 'couche noire', which is thought to date to Magdalenian V or VI; however, the provenance of remains within this layer is not clear. Furthermore, both human and animal remains were found within not only a black layer ('limon noir'), but also a red layer ('limon rouge') and a breccia deposit. Owen took such an interest in the cave itself, as well as the faunal and artefactual remains which had been recovered from it, that he purchased de Lastic's first collection for the British Museum in 1. It also ranks the Bruniquel structures among the very first in human history. Text above adapted from: Jaubert et al. In one chamber, 3. Natural limestone growths have begun to cover parts of the structure, so by dating these growths a team led by Jacques Jaubert at the University of Bordeaux could work out an approximate age for the stalagmite constructions. They are built from around 4. Indeed, Jaubert’s team found traces of fire at several points around and on the structures. So perhaps Bruniquel – like Chauvet – served some ritual role. If so it would provide more evidence for the Neanderthal’s capacity for symbolic thought. Length of specimen 1. It is a good example of a 'naturalistic' depiction, in typical Magdalenian style, of a Late Pleistocene wild horse. As well as fish bones and harpoons, the deposits in the cave also contained little forked and barbed points, of types known from other sites that date to this late phase of the Old Stone Age. Over the years, it has been thought that these points were arrow tips for shooting birds, or spikes for catching small animals in traps. However, it makes most sense that they were hooks used for line fishing. There are simple V- shaped hooks with two prongs made of bone, as well as small barbed points made of antler. These were tied straight on to the line. The pronged and barbed antler pieces were probably tied to bone or antler shafts to form barbed hooks. The line would probably have been made from animal hair that was twisted or plied into long lengths of suitable thickness and strength. Together with spears and harpoons this equipment reflects the diverse and sophisticated weaponry of late Stone Age hunters. Photo and text: http: //www. The animals are perfectly modelled from all angles. The front figure is a female and has a smaller body and antlers. Her delicately shaded fur is depicted using feathered strokes to represent the reindeers’ distinctive autumn coat. The larger, male, figure is not shaded but the strength of his body is indicated by the bold, sweeping lines of the carving. Italian population in Brazil. However, since the 2. Italian immigrants to Brazil was in full decline. The previous censuses of 1. Census never existed). In consequence, there are no official figures about the size of the Italian population in Brazil during the mass immigration period (1. There are estimates available, and the most reliable is the one done by Giorgio Mortara, even though the figures he found may have underestimated the real size of the Italian population. Another evaluation conducted by Bruno Zuculin found the presence of 9. Italians in Brazil as of 1. Notice that all these figures only include people born in Italy, and not their Brazilian born descendants. Mental health history including asylum and community care periods and consumer accounts. Introduction Murray Bowen (1913- 1990) was the first and only psychiatrist to describe a theory explaining human behavior. He trained at Menninger and in 1954, Bowen. By 1. 90. 2, 5. 2% percent of the city's population was born in Italy. In the early 2. 0th century, many rural Italian workers from Rio Grande do Sul migrated to the west of Santa Catarina and then further north to Paran. These were Garibaldi and Bento Gon. These immigrants were predominantly from Veneto, in northern Italy. After five years, in 1. Italian immigrants arriving caused the Brazilian government to create another Italian colony, Caxias do Sul. After initially settling in the government- promoted colonies, many of the Italian immigrants spread into other areas of Rio Grande do Sul seeking better opportunities. They created many other Italian colonies on their own, mainly in highlands, because the lowlands were already populated by German immigrants and native ga. The Italian established many vineyards in the region. Nowadays, the wine produced in these areas of Italian colonization in southern Brazil is much appreciated within the country, though little is available for export. In 1. 87. 5, the first Italian colonies were established in Santa Catarina, which lies immediately to the north of Rio Grande do Sul. The colonies gave rise to towns such as Crici. With time, however, they would become thoroughly integrated economically and culturally into the larger society. In any case, Italian immigration to southern Brazil was very important to the economic development, as well to the culture of the region. Southeastern Brazil. It seems paradoxical, but it is a reality, because S. However, the majority of them settled in Southeastern Brazil (mainly in the State of S. In the beginning, the government was responsible for bringing the immigrants (in most cases, paying for their transportation by ship), but later the farmers were responsible for making contracts with immigrants or specialized companies in recruiting Italian workers. Many posters were spread in Italy, with pictures of Brazil, selling the idea that everybody could become rich there by working with coffee, which was called by the Italian immigrants the green gold. Most coffee plantations were in the States of S. Rio de Janeiro was declining in the 1. S. Thus, migrants were naturally more attracted to the State of S. However, the situation was not easy. Many Brazilian farmers were used to command slaves and treated the immigrants as indentured servants. While, in Southern Brazil, the Italian immigrants were living in relatively well developed colonies, in Southeastern Brazil they were living in semi- slavery conditions in the coffee plantations. Many rebellions against Brazilian farmers occurred and the public denouncements caused great commotion in Italy, forcing the Italian government to issue the Prinetti decree that established barriers to immigration to Brazil. Located both, respectively, in the North- Central and Northeastern regions of S. The cerrado (Portuguese for thick and dense, meaning thick grassland) is a vast area of savanna- like grasslands in Brazil. In the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Italian descendants are 5% of the population. From 1. 90. 3 to 1. Italians immigrated to Brazil, compared to 9. Argentina and 3,5. United States. This was mainly due to the Prinetti Decree in Italy, that banned the subsidized immigration to Brazil (the Brazilian Government or landowners could not pay the passage of the immigrants anymore). The immigrants who went to Southern Brazil became small landowners and, despite the problems faced by them (dense forest, epidemics of yellow fever, lack of consumer market) the easy access to lands increased their opportunities. However, only a minority of the Italians were taken to Southern Brazil. Most of the country's economy was based on coffee plantations, and Brazil was already the main coffee exporter in the world (since the 1. As a consequence of the end of slavery and that most former slaves left the plantations, there was a labour shortage on coffee plantations. In consequence, passages were offered to Europeans (the so- called . In Brazil, there were no labour laws (the first concrete labour laws only appeared in the 1. Get. Contracts signed by the immigrants could easily be violated by the Brazilian landowners. Accustomed to dealing with African slaves, the remnants of slavery influenced on how Brazilian landowners dealt with Italian workers: immigrants were often monitored, with extensive hours of work. In some cases, they were obliged to buy the products they needed from the landowner. Moreover, the coffee farms were located in rather isolated regions. If the immigrants became sick, they would take hours to reach the nearest hospital. The structure of labor used on farms included the labor of Italian women and children. Keeping their Italian culture was also made more difficult: the Catholic churches and Italian cultural centers were far from the farms. The immigrants who did not accept the standards imposed by the landowner were replaced by other immigrants. This forced them to accept the impositions of the landowner or they would have to leave his lands. Even though Italians were considered to be . Many immigrants left Brazil after their experience on S. Between 1. 88. 2 and 1. S. The high numbers of Italians asking the Italian Consulate a passage to leave Brazil was so significant that in 1. Italian funds for repatriation were used in Brazil. It is estimated that, between 1. Italians left Brazil, mainly after failed experiences on coffee farms. The majority of the Italians who left the country were unable to add the money they wanted. Most of these people returned to Italy, while others re- migrated to Argentina, Uruguay or to the United States. The output of immigrants concerned Brazilian landowners, who constantly complained about the lack of workers. Spanish immigrants began arriving in greater numbers, but soon Spain also started to create barriers for further immigration of Spaniards to coffee farms in Brazil. The continuing problem of lack of labor in the farms was, then, temporarily resolved with the arrival of Japanese immigrants, from 1. Despite the high numbers of immigrants leaving the country, the majority of the Italians remained in Brazil forever. Most of the immigrants only remained one year working on coffee farms and then they left the plantations. A small number of them earned enough money to buy their own lands, and became farmers themselves. However, the majority migrated to Brazilian urban centers. Many Italians worked in factories (in 1. S. In Rio de Janeiro, a considerable number of the factory workers was also composed of Italians. Those agglomerations of Italians in urban centers gave birth to typically Italian neighborhoods, such as Mooca, which is until today linked to its Italian past. Other Italians became traders, mostly itinerant traders, selling their products in different regions. A common presence on the streets of S. Even though most of the first generation of immigrants still lived in poverty, the children of Italians, born in Brazil, often changed their social status as they diversified their field of work, leaving the poor conditions of their parents and not rarely becoming part of the local elite. For the Italians in S. There is research that suggests that even first- generation immigrants, born in Italy, soon became assimilated in the new country. Even in Southern Brazil, where most of the Italians were living in isolated rural communities, without much contact with Brazilians, and where they kept the Italian patriarchal family structure (and therefore the father chose the wive or husband for their children, giving preference to the Italians) the assimilation process was also quick. In comparison, 2. Italian, mostly dialects (8. Even though the Italian immigration was larger and more recent than the German one, the Italian group tended to be more easily assimilated. In the 1. 95. 0 Census, the number of people in Rio Grande do Sul who reported to speak Italian dropped to 1. In comparison, 4. Portuguese, of course). Then, the prohibition of speaking Italian, German and Japanese during World War II was not so great to the Italian community as it was to the other two groups. The Italian newspapers in Brazil and also the Italian government, in turn, were uncomfortable with the assimilation of Italians in the country. This occurred mostly after the Great Naturalization period. The Italian institutions encouraged the entry of Italians in Brazilian politics, although the presence of immigrants was, initially, small. The Italian dialects came to dominate the streets of S. Over time, these languages based on Italian dialects tended to disappear and nowadays their presence is small. On the other hand, Italians in S. About the Italians in Santa Catarina, the Italian Consul asserted: The marriage between an Italian man and a Brazilian woman, between an Italian woman and a Brazilian man is very common, and it would be even more frequent if the majority of the Italians were not living segregated on the countryside. The German Brazilian population was also treated by some Italians as repulsive, even though many Germans and Italians lived together in many areas of Southern Brazil. The Brazilian Indians were often treated as wild people, and cases of conflicts between Italians and Indians for the occupation of lands in Southern Brazil were not uncommon. The Spider (1. 95. Overview. When a man doesn. Coming back with the Sheriff, the spider is seemingly killed by DDT spraying, and the body then hauled for storage in the high school gymnasium. However, a loud dose of rock music by a teenage garage band revives the arachnid and sends it rampaging through the town. In the small town of River Falls, teenager Carol Flynn becomes concerned when her father Jack fails to return home the night before her birthday. Fearful that her father may have had an accident, Carol convinces her boyfriend, Mike Simpson, to drive her around the back roads to look for him. Some miles from town, Carol and Mike find a strange, heavy rope stretched across the highway, and nearby, Jack's empty, crashed pickup. Near the truck, Carol finds a small gift box with a bracelet inside and a birthday note from her father. Hoping to calm Carol, Mike suggests that if her father were injured he may have decided to spend the cold night in the nearby caverns, and Carol agrees to try looking there. Inside the caverns, Carol and Mike come across several skeletons and, deeply disturbed, give up their search. On their way back outside, Carol falls off a ledge onto an enormous rope- like web. As Mike pulls Carol to saftey, they hear a strange high- pitched shriek and to their horror, a gigantic spider appears at the top of the web. Panic- stricken, the teenagers flee the cavern and return to town to report their experience to Sheriff Cagle and their science teacher, Mr.
Although Kingman identifies the rope as heavy spun silk, Cagle remains skeptical about Carol and Mike's story. Under pressure from Kingman, Cagle takes several deputies to examine the site of Jack's accident and, at Kingman's request, orders a local pesticide company to send a tanker filled with DDT to the caverns. Cagle remains doubtful until the group comes across the numerous skeletons inside the cavern. Carol then becomes hysterical when they find a fresh skeleton with remnants of clothing that she recognizes as her father's. When Cagle nearly falls onto the rope- web, he hastily orders the pest control workers to enter the cavern. Attracted by the vibrations of the web, the giant spider appears and attacks one of the deputies. After Cagle and the others fire their guns, which prove useless, the pest control men douse the creature with streams of DDT until it collapses. Later, outside the cave, Carol realizes that she has lost the bracelet from her father, but Kingman refuses to allow her to return inside because of the lingering, lethal fumes. When Cagle recommends sealing the cavern entrance, Kingman requests that the spider's carcass be taken to the high school to be exhibited as an item of great scientific interest. Kingman has the spider's body moved to the high school gymnasium for a brief display, after which it will be transferred to a local university. The next day, Carol remains despondent over the loss of the bracelet and telephones Mike to plead with him to take her to search for it. Although reluctant, Mike asks to borrow his friend Joe's car and takes Carol back to the caverns. Meanwhile, Joe and a small group of his friends, who are part of a rock and roll band, press high school janitor Hugo to allow them inside the gym to rehearse for an upcoming dance. Hugo agrees, and the group's playing attracts several students, who begin dancing. Unknown to everyone, the spider has only been stunned by the pesticide and now, stirred by the music's vibrations, revives and breaks out of the gym, killing Hugo as it flees. The spider goes on a rampage through the streets of River Falls, destroying buildings and attacking people. Kingman warns Cagle, who after discovering that the long distance telephone lines have been damaged by the spider, orders his deputy Dave to drive to the neighboring town of Springdale to request National Guard assistance. Learning that the spider is headed to his own neighborhood, Kingman drives to his home and finds it under attack by the creature. Kingman distracts the spider by ramming it with his car, then drives out of town, prompting the creature to follow. When he returns to town, Kingman finds Dave's body in the street and reports to Cagle that his deputy was unable to summon help. A short time later, a local man fleeing River Falls sees the giant spider going back inside the caverns and returns to inform Cagle. Kingman recommends that they dynamite the cavern entrance shut with the assistance of road foreman Sam Haskel. Unaware of the sipder's rampage, Carol and Mike find the bracelet while wandering through the cavern, then realize that they are lost. Meanwhile in town, Mike's father worries about his son's long absence and telephones Mrs. Flynn, who speculates that Carol may have returned to the caverns. As night falls, Haskel detonates explosives around the mouth of cavern, thus sealing the entrance with rocks. The impacts of the explosions knocks Carol and Mike unconscious. Upon arriving at the cavern, Mr. Flynn spot Joe's car and hasten to inform Cagle and Kingman that they believe the teenagers are trapped inside the cavern. When Kingman suggests that they dig straight into the top of the mountain to get inside, Haskel agrees. Simpson asks Kingman how he plans to eliminate the giant spider, Kingman notices several power lines nearby and suggests that they rig a connection to them to electrocute the creature. As Carol and Mike revive inside the cave, they hear Haskel's hammering and blasting, begin shouting for help, and are terrified when the giant spider appears. In an attempt to escape, Mike leads Carol onto a narrow ledge, but a portion of the ledge collapses, trapping the couple against the wall. Moments later, Haskel and his men finally break through the mountain top, after which Kingman leads the men carrying the electrical lines into the cavern. As the giant spider attempts to lower itself near the ledge on which Carol and Mike are trapped, Kingman finds them and throws Mike one end of the wiring, creating an arc with the wires around the giant spider. Powerful electrical voltage then passes through the creature which finally crumples, falling from its web onto the sharp stalagmites below. After Carol and Mike are rescued, the cavern is sealed shut permanently. Car le jour de leur malheur est proche, Et ce qui les attend ne tardera pas. Versets Parall!
